I was wondering if your doctor has become obsessed with your high cholesterol, and is wanting you to take cholesterol-lowering drugs called statins? Have you niggling doubts, as to their benefit and safety?

Could it be, that you owe it to your body’s wellbeing and longevity quality, to do some self-care investigation?

The Cholesterol Myths: Exposing the Fallacy that Saturated Fat and cholesterol cause Heart Disease by Uffe Ravnskov, will re-educate you about saturated fat and cholesterol.

What I Liked About ‘The Cholesterol Myths Book’: How it Helped Me with My Search for Self-Care

When I followed medical advice, more than thirty years, to eat low-fat, lower my cholesterol level, and increase the number of cereals, grains, fruits, vegetable, and dairy foods each day – I LOST my slim waist size and put on WEIGHT. I was accused of lying about my diet plan…

Since then, I’ve been researching and reading about ways to improve the quality of my nutritional advice, and the quality of my food. If you want to know what drives cholesterol detectives read my About page.

Along the way I discovered, that too much fructose & refined carbohydrates, and too much omega-6 vegetable oil trigger inflammation within the body. Then I discovered that inflammation, not cholesterol causes heart disease.

I found over the years, that my doctor’s brushed aside my concerns about how, the ‘food pyramids,’ and ‘healthy plate’s, promote food that contains more than 70 % carbohydrates content per meal. That every carbohydrate and starch, are simple chains of sugar linked together, was never agreed by my doctor. Fiber was king, despite it being surrounded by chains and chains of various sugars. No, Medical professional mentioned, that insulin stores excess blood glucose as fat, like my Marieb, Human & Anatomy Text did.

I thought I was going mad…

Thankfully I’ve found it incredibly gratifying, that a medical professional has the courage to break-a-way from Medical and Pharmaceutically driven dogma, of providing you and me with the WRONG ADVICE about saturated fat, cholesterol, and heart disease causes. Dr. Uffe Ravnskov, a highly qualified doctor and scientist analyze the studies used to justify the cholesterol hypothesis.

He demonstrates that the idea that animal fats and cholesterol cause heart disease is based on flimsy, even fraudulent evidence and wishful thinking. Dr. Ravnskov includes a helpful discussion on the dangers of vegetable oils and cholesterol-lowering drugs.

This provided me with powerful self-care education on:

  • The dangers of omega-6 vegetable oils
  • The dangers of cholesterol-lowering medication, (statins), on woman and men

When I looked inside my pantry, I found the omega-6 vegetable oils I cooked with and made salad dressings with, were: vegetable oil, canola oil, soy oil, and cotton-seed oil – YIKES!! I put these damaging, inflammation driving, hydrogenated refined omega-6 seed oils into my garbage.

My Human Anatomy & Physiology, Marieb text book showed me how cholesterol was continually made by my liver, and that cholesterol is a steroid fat, which is the parent ingredient of my sex hormones.

Dr. Ravnskov, taught me that cholesterol-lowering drugs have dangerous side-effects. He supported cholesterol’s important role in my body.  And confirmed that saturated animal fat, is confused with saturated Trans fats made from hydrogenated omega-6 vegetable oils. This  was meaningful information for me to have – and I hope it will be for you too. Related Evidence:

The Cholesterol Myths Books: Flaws

Amazons Verified Purchase Comments, feedback on February 28, 2003, says this:

  • “If Ravnskov’s book has a flaw, it is his lack of alternatives to taking statins. Studies not mentioned in the book have shown that eating moderate amounts of fatty fish or taking a fish oil supplement, can be just as beneficial as taking statins”.
  • “Avoiding trans fats can give you a similar reduction in risk. Still, it is an excellent book and well worth reading”.

I am so happy to see this post. I too learnt a few years ago the damage that the low fat era and the false food pyramid has done to our society! I find it difficult to convince my friends the problem is not cholesterol but high carbs, fructose and omega 6 which is found in fast foods and processed foods! I love that you’re talking about this as I know wholeheartedly that you are 100% correct with all of the information you shared. I feel so passionate about this. I’ve also learnt that cholesterol increases to help fight inflammation. I will have to get myself a copy of this book you are talking about and show it to my friends who aren’t convinced by me. Maybe they’ll be more convinced by a doctor. I follow a keto diet which addresses the need for high fat, low carbs and reducing processed omega 6. thanks for a great post. I will be coming back and follow this valuable web site.

Thank you for sharing this information about cholesterol. I had no idea that omega 6 can cause inflammation, so I’ll be mindful of this in future. Having suffered a stroke 5 years ago, my doctor started prescribing me statins. I’ve been taking them ever since but haven’t really considered side effects. The cholesterol myths book sounds interesting and I’ll take a look.

You make some very valid points here. This was a very interesting read. There are still so many Health Professionals that are not willing to break from their old way of thinking even if the proof is right at their fingertips.

I have heard so many negative things about Omega 6 and you outlined a few of them in this article. Many people have so many items like this in their homes that puts them at risk they are not even aware of.

I have bookmarked this one. Thanks for sharing.

      Hey Nate,
I’m really pleased you’ve bookmarked this.
Health professional in my country have no idea Omega 6 seed oils drive inflammation. Our food stores and all baked goods are full of it as the main fat ingredient.
The fear of saturated fat and cholesterol is promoted as the cause of heart disease, and NOT inflammation.
      Thanks for your informed comments
